Immigration Directions

Immigration Project

Overview:

The object of this project is to use the two readings from Upton Sinclair and Jacob Riis as a starting point to understand two things: 1.) the quality of life of immigrants in the later part of the 19th century and 2.) the quality of life of people facing similar situations in today's world.

Some of the themes present in both these works are as follows:

Poor housing conditions. Tenements
Horrible condition of streets
Sanitation
Child neglect
Child abuse
Child labor
Filth
Unions
Disease
Poor working conditions in Packingtown, Chicago.
Political corruption
Animal abuse
Boss corruption. Manipulation of immigrants populations.
Hard poverty
Overcrowding

Tasks

Put all of these things into a Powerpoint, Prezi, or Video.

1.) Use six direct quotes from The Jungle and How the Other Half Lives readings. Three should come from each. The quotes should represent some of the above themes.

Each quote needs a minimum of two accompanying pictures. One picture should be from the 19th century/ early 20th century. The other picture should be from modern times.

2.) Using the newspaper archive links on my blog, find three newspaper articles that come from the late 19th/early 20th century. Each article should represent a theme from above.

3.) Find four political cartoons that deal with late 19th century immigration/city overcrowding (any of the themes above) and/or cartoons which show similar themes today (for example, the poor working conditions in Bangladesh).

Options: you may want to include a soundtrack, video clips, audio interviews etc. Going beyond these basic requirements is encouraged. Invest some time and make something you can be proud of.
